If Your Fingers Keep Going Numb After Years Of Working With Your Hands, Read This Before Assuming It's “Just Carpal Tunnel”
A commonly overlooked source of hand tingling can sit farther up the arm than most people realize — which may help explain why another wrist brace never seemed to solve the problem.
I spent most of my adult life believing your hands either worked or they didn't.
Mine always worked.
I'm a welder and fabricator. Twenty-two years.
I've spent more hours gripping a welding gun, grinder, drill, wrench or steering wheel than I could ever count.
And for most of those years, I never thought twice about my hands.
Until they started going dead on me.
At first, it wasn't dramatic.
I'd get that little buzz in my fingers halfway through a shift.
Usually the pinky or ring finger.
I'd put the tool down, shake my hand out a couple times, flex my fingers… and get back to work.
You know the move.
Anybody who's worked with their hands long enough knows the move.
I figured I'd slept funny. Or gripped the gun too hard. Or maybe this was just what happened after twenty years of beating the hell out of your hands.
So I ignored it.
That was easy when it lasted five minutes.
It got harder when it stopped going away.
Then My Hand Started Waking Me Up At Night.
I'd wake up around 2 in the morning and my right hand would be completely dead.
Not sore.
Dead.
Like somebody had replaced it with a wooden hand while I was sleeping.
I'd sit on the edge of the bed shaking it out, opening and closing my fingers, waiting for that horrible pins-and-needles feeling to start.
And eventually it would.
Funny thing is, I actually started wanting the tingling.
Because tingling meant I could feel something.

“I couldn't even turn the key in my car's ignition with my right hand…”
That last one got me. Because I knew exactly what he meant.
Eventually mine wasn't just happening at night anymore.
It happened driving. Watching TV. Holding my phone. And especially after a long day gripping tools.
Some afternoons I'd swear my hand felt like I was wearing a mitten.
I could still see my fingers. I could still move them. But they didn't feel completely like mine.
Then I dropped a grinder.
I'd held that same grinder a thousand times. It just slipped.
Nobody got hurt.
One of the guys laughed and said something about me getting old.
I laughed too.
But inside?
That scared the hell out of me.
Because there's a big difference between your hand falling asleep… and wondering whether you can still trust it.
The Part I Didn't Tell Anyone
I hid it.
That's probably stupid. But if you've worked a trade, you understand.
You don't walk onto a job site announcing that your hands are getting weaker.
They're how you prove you know what you're doing without saying a word.
They're how you earn your paycheck. They're how you pay the mortgage.
So I compensated. Switched hands when I could. Adjusted my grip. Shook the numbness out when nobody was looking.
And when somebody asked?
“I'm good.”
Always good.
Because guys like us are taught that aches, stiffness and numb fingers are just part of the deal.
“You'll get used to it…”
Work through it. Don't complain. You'll worry about it later.
Except eventually later shows up.
And when you're lying awake at 2AM opening and closing a hand you can barely feel, you start thinking about things you don't want to think about.
What happens in another five years?
What happens if I can't hold a tool?
What happens if this gets worse?
I watched my old man beat his body up working.
By the time he was older, everything hurt.
I didn't want to become that guy.
I couldn't afford for them to quit before I did.
So I Finally Went To The Doctor.
I figured I'd done the responsible thing.
Maybe he'd tell me exactly what was happening.
Instead, after looking at my hand and wrist, I heard the diagnosis I'd already been expecting:
“Probably carpal tunnel.”
Then came the wrist brace.
And then came my favorite piece of advice:
Rest it?
I almost laughed.
Rest what?
My hand?
The thing I use ten hours a day to earn money?
I've got bills that don't take sick days.
“Just rest it” sounds perfectly reasonable when your hands aren't your paycheck.
For me, it wasn't a plan.
I wore the brace anyway.
And I'll give it credit: at night, it helped some. For a while.
But during the day? I couldn't exactly weld in the damn thing.

The conversation eventually moved toward tests, specialists and the possibility of surgery if things continued getting worse.
I'm not against doctors.
And I'm not going to tell somebody who needs surgery not to get it.
But cutting into the hand I use to make my living wasn't exactly something I was excited to rush into.
Especially when I still didn't understand why this was happening in the first place.
Before I Let Anybody Touch My Wrist, I Started Looking For Another Answer.
And that's where I made the same mistake almost everybody makes.
I searched for things that treated…
my hand and wrist.
- Another brace.
- Creams.
- Menthol rubs.
- Magnesium stuff.
- “Nerve support” supplements.
- A massage gun.
- I even looked at those copper bracelets.
And every product had basically the same promise:
Do something to the place that feels numb.
Some things felt good temporarily.
But I kept ending up in the same place:

A buddy of mine had a physical therapist in his family.
We got talking one afternoon and I mentioned my hand.
I expected him to grab my wrist.

About halfway between my wrist and elbow, he pushed his thumb into the muscle.
I nearly came off the chair.
It felt like he had found a knot buried three inches inside my arm.
Then he asked me how long I'd been welding.

“How hard do you grip the gun?”
“I got the same thing when running lots of wire, and found it was because for some reason I had a death grip on the gun.”
Death grip.
That was me.

The Nerve To Your Hand Doesn't Begin At Your Wrist.
That sounds obvious now.
It wasn't obvious to me then.
I had spent months obsessing over my wrist because that's where everybody told me the problem was.
But the nerves supplying your hand travel down your arm and through areas of the forearm before they ever reach the wrist.
And in some people, nerves can become irritated or compressed higher in the forearm.
There is even a recognized condition involving compression of the median nerve around the pronator teres region of the forearm, and its symptoms can overlap with carpal tunnel symptoms.
It would explain why the brace could help sometimes without solving everything.
It would explain why long days of gripping made the symptoms worse.
It would explain why my forearm felt like concrete.
I wasn't ready to believe I'd discovered some miracle cure.
But for the first time, I had a physical explanation I could understand:
Nerves travel through that same region.
And when symptoms are related to irritation or compression there, working on the forearm itself suddenly makes a lot more sense than rubbing another cream onto numb fingers.
There was only one problem.
I still didn't know what to actually do about it.
Then he reached into his bag…
…And Pulled Out A Piece Of Steel.
I looked at him.
Then at the thing in his hand.
“You're kidding.”
It wasn't a brace. It wasn't electronic. It wasn't some complicated medical device.
It was just a smooth, curved piece of stainless steel with a rounded edge.

I'm not going to tell you my hand magically came back to life.

And that constant buzzing I'd gotten used to?

I was physically working on the tight tissue farther up the chain.
Apparently, This Isn't Some Weird Internet Trick.
What he was doing is commonly called instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization, or IASTM.
You may also hear people refer to similar techniques as scraping.
Physical therapists and other practitioners use shaped instruments to work over soft tissue as part of rehabilitation and mobility work.
The research around IASTM is not strong enough to honestly call it a cure for hand numbness—and that's not what I'm claiming here. But manual therapy and nerve-mobility approaches have been studied in people with carpal-tunnel-type symptoms, while scraping techniques have also been studied for effects such as local microcirculation.
Not magnets. Not another monthly bottle of pills. Not a cream promising to rebuild a nerve. And definitely not magic.
The stranger part came when I started reading about where the modern metal-tool version came from.
One of the best-known systems, the Graston Technique, traces back to David Graston—a machinist who created metal instruments while trying to recover from his own injury.
A machinist.
That got my attention.
The technique later spread into physical therapy and sports settings.

If your numbness is new, rapidly worsening or spreading—or you're developing increasing weakness—get it checked by a qualified professional.
